Clinical Assessment

I provide assessments for children, adolescents and adults for various purposes, depending on the reason for referral.  These assessments include educational, career guidance assessments, as well as clinical assessments.  Clinical assessments are tailored to each individual’s specific needs.  Clinical assessments include:
Cognitive (intellectual quotient) functioning
U
Perceptual and emotional functioning
Neuropsychological functioning
Scholastic functioning
Assessment involves clinical interview, psychological testing, evaluation and diagnosis.  This process guides treatment as it is not always immediately clear what a client’s underlying difficulties are.  I conduct assessments for a number of problems, including, but not exclusive to the following examples:

  • Children experiencing difficulty in school
  • Individuals facing problems in the workplace
  • Those experiencing interpersonal difficulties
  • Students struggling with subject or career choices
  • Individuals struggling with concentration and/or memory difficulties
  • Clients presenting with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety

Testimonials

Two Stories

“I was a cancer patient in remission for two months when I first consulted with Colleen Thiel.  I was broken, trying to cope with my new life, depressed and unable to figure out what was happening to me.  I suffered anxiety attacks at night and felt completely down.

Today I am back to being myself, full of life and ready to take on the world.  Colleen found a way of getting me through it and back up on my feet again.  She is a caring and professional person and definitely my choice of psychologist should I require one again.”

“Thank you very much for the counselling sessions you provided to my daughter and I.  It was a new experience for her at such a young age to speak to someone other than mommy and to realize that she counts as a person, that her feelings matter and she is valued.  The sessions definitely made an impact on her and she can deal better with similar situations when she is faced with them. It also equipped me as a single parent and made me doubt myself less.  It is a process, and Colleen made it so much easier to deal with our circumstances and we are so grateful for that gift.”

PLease KNOW

This is a safe space for you

With years of experience in assessment and treatment, I have come to practice many of my own researched techniques to manage the stress of modern day living.  I have practiced mindfulness-based stress reduction to alleviate stress and difficulty in sleeping. I also follow the guidelines of cognitive-behavioural therapy in my own life to maintain my own personal balance. I prefer practicing techniques I use in psychotherapy as I am motivated by results.

My approach as a psychotherapist could be summarised by the following Carl R. Rogers quote: “Before every session, I take a moment to remember my humanity.  There is no experience that this man has that I cannot share with him, no fear that I cannot understand, no suffering that I cannot care about, because I too am human.”
